Common Health Issues

Mitral Valve Disease (MVD)

MVD is the most common heart condition in Cavaliers. It occurs when the mitral valve deteriorates, causing a heart murmur that can progress to heart failure.

Symptoms include:

  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Rapid breathing
  • Exercise intolerance

What to do: Regular heart screenings are essential. Early detection improves quality of life.

Syringomyelia (SM)

SM is a neurological condition caused by skull malformation. It can be painful and requires veterinary management.

Symptoms include:

  • Neck scratching (often air scratching)
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Weakness or wobbliness
  • Pain episodes

Eye Conditions

Cavaliers may develop:

  • Cataracts
  • Dry eye
  • Retinal problems

Regular eye exams help catch issues early.

Hip Dysplasia

Though more common in larger breeds, Cavaliers can also be affected. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain on joints.
